Job Description
• Job Title: Membership Manager
• Location: Remote
• Contract: 12-month fixed term (with potential for extension)
• Hours: Part-time (equivalent to 3–4 days per week, flexible)
• Pay: £30,000 – £35,000 pro rata (depending on experience)
• Reporting to: Chief Executive
Role Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in the growth and development of ADSO’s membership services. Working closely with the Chief Executive, directors, board members, and regional representatives, you will lead on strategies to recruit and retain members, develop new income streams, and deliver high-quality consultancy services. You’ll bring a commercial eye and attention to detail, ensuring our members receive excellent value and that ADSO is equipped to grow sustainably.
Key Responsibilities
1. Membership Recruitment, Retention & Engagement
• Develop and implement strategies to attract new members and retain existing ones.
• Monitor membership data to identify trends and opportunities for growth.
• Develop surveys and engagement tools to gather member feedback and inform services.
• Collaborate with regional networks to ensure local activity is supported and promoted.
2. Training & Professional Development
• Support the planning and delivery of training, webinars, and member events (online and in person).
• Work with the Director of Training to identify training needs and develop relevant content.
• Support the Director of Training with new training projects, taking a lead role where appropriate for agreed programme areas
• Liaise with the Qualifications Manager to align training with ADSO’s qualifications framework.
• Assist with trainer support and induction in collaboration with East Midlands Councils (our training delivery partner) and the Director of Training.
3. Consultancy Development
• Manage and respond to incoming consultancy enquiries, ensuring timely and professional handling.
• Recruit and onboard new consultants.
• Develop a professional consultancy toolkit, including working with the Director of Communications to develop marketing materials, proposal templates, and case studies.
• Implement light-touch project tracking and quality assurance systems.
4. Income Generation & Innovation
• Identify and develop new revenue streams linked to membership and consultancy.
• Assess and optimise pricing models for services.
• Work with the sponsorship manager on partnership opportunities.
• Monitor and report on performance against income targets.
5. Stakeholder Collaboration & Representation
• Build and maintain strong relationships with ADSO directors, board members, partners, and members.
• Represent ADSO at sector events and meetings.
Person Specification
We are looking for someone who understands the values and mission of ADSO and who can bring enthusiasm to helping us improve our member services. This will include being driven to help us develop income streams to support the development of the organisation, but in a way that keeps our membership and activities accessible to those at all stages of their careers. You will have some of the skills and experiences listed below, but more importantly you will be passionate about the organisation, our members and being part of a small, flexible and growing team.

Essential Skills & Experience
• Strong understanding of membership organisations and/or consultancy service delivery.
• Self-starter with excellent organisational and communication skills
• Experience in service development, training, or commercial activities in a similar context.
• Good financial understanding with ability to develop pricing models and engage with budget setting and tracking income targets.
• Good knowledge of local government and interest in governance and local democracy.
• Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple workstreams.
• Strong written communication skills with the ability to produce engaging and professional materials.
• Confident with digital tools, remote working, and managing own workload.
• A collaborative and proactive team player.
• Willingness to learn, to adapt the role as the organisation changes and to be an active team member at ADSO which may mean supporting other areas of work from time to time.
Desirable Skills & Experience
• Experience in recruiting and onboarding consultants or trainers.
• Marketing or service design experience.
• Previous involvement with ADSO or similar associations.
